In todays session, we explored the production process of musician Rashad Becker by producing sounds from scratch utilizing VCR Rack, which is a simulator of classic hardware synthesizers and drum machines. since this was my first time attempting to create sounds using a simulated machine like this, the process was challenging in many areas.
the process began by opening the application, clearing the rack to create a blank module. by right-clicking on our module we were able to browse through the library and select a module of our choice, but in our context of producing a sound, we began by adding a virtual sound interface, which is labeled audio 2. After selecting our audio device we then went back into the library to add a voltage-controlled oscillator which is labeled as a VCO. For our first connection, we dragged our cable to connect the input and output by holding and dragging where we wanted the connection to be.
After these steps we began to shape our sound, I must note that during this stage we were hit with a constant sound which we could filter using a VCF which is a Voltage controlled filter, when moving this between the already added audio and VCO we then connect theed the output of our VCO into the input of the VCF which then allowed us to controlled the HI and low pass filter of our sound. next, we added a VCA, a voltage-controlled amplifier to control the amplitude of our sound. we placed it in between the VCF and audio module and disconnected the cable that was between the VCF and audio interface. this allowed us to control the volume of the sound from the VCO by just moving the yellow line up and down.
After using a VCR rack to produce a sound we then experimented by adding other third-party oscillators and moving around dials and cables to produce a sound inspired by Rashad Becker.
what I found most difficult was remembering what each connection meant and where the sound source was coming from which I now understand is from whichever oscillator you’re using. each connection has a different role in producing the final sound. I think working this way using this technique offers music producers the ability to create unique original sounds, understanding how to use this can allow a music producer to create any sound imaginable since it’s a very detailed method of sound design. it allows more creativity for a producer.
