in this session, our task was to explore my mother’s production method and sound to try replicate her sound. i partnered up with a classmate who did the drums, which also became a practice of collaboration. Although our task was to also utilize the sample clips provided to us and incorporate them in the production similar to how Moor Mother uses distorted sample layers to spread a message but also provide an eerie sound, I spent too much time on the melody. I forgot to encourage it in my work. the final result is a dark ambient melody with slow and off-place hard-hitting drums which aligns perfectly with Moor’s sinister sound in some of her music.
I began the melody with a dark pad which I which I layered with another to make it sound more ambient. Since the other pad is in another key it brings out the sinister energy of the beat when it comes in. What I think brings all the components together is the constant low synth bass I added at the end. I think the use of this adds significant texture to the beat and sounds perfect layered under the drums.
I enjoyed this production process but I do think there are some areas on my part I could’ve improved on, for instance, my use of layering was interesting but more layers and ambient sounds would’ve made the beat sound more powerful. panning some sounds would’ve also made this track more interesting to listen to. finally, if I utilized the sample clips that were provided to us, it would’ve resulted in a more Moor Mother type of production where she pushes out strong political messages in her music.
